Building a Covered Adult Horned Goat Feeder

Building a Roof for the Adult Horned Goat Feeder

Materials:

(8) 8ft 2x4s
(2) 4’x8′ sheets of plywood
Optional: Sheet metal roofing and fasteners

Cuts:
(1) full length 8ft 2×4
(4) 93″ 2x4s
(4) 47 1/4″ 2x4s cut at 8 degree angles
(6) 22″ 2x4s cut at 8 degree angles

Assembly:

  1. On each 42″ sides, measure and mark at both 20 1/4″ and 21 3/4″ from one side. This gives you the center ridgeline location.
  2. Measure 19 1/2″ from each end of the 96″ 2×4.
  3. Place the 96″ 2×4 on the center ridgeline location, parallel to the (2) 57″ sides and center using the 19 1/2″ marks off each end.
  4. Toenail the center ridge in place by angling nails in at a 45 degrees from each side about 1/2 inch up the center ridgeline.
  5. On (2) 93″ 2x4s, measure and mark 18″ from each end. These marks will center the overhang of the feeder.
  6. Over the top of each 57″ 2×4 top rail, fasten a 93″ 2×4 parallel with the center ridgeline using the marks to center.
  7. From the top, nail a 47 1/4″ 2×4 truss cut at an 8 degree angle to each side of the peak, center ridgeline.
  8. Nail to the end of the 93″ rails.
  9. Between the tails of the 47 1/4″ trusses, fit a 93″ 2×4 and nail from the outsides. Repeat on both sides to form the outline of the roof.
  10. On the 57″ caps and the 93″ ends, measure and mark from the outside edges. These will mark where the 22″ trusses cut at 8 degrees will be nailed.
  11. These measurements are 23 1/4″, 24 3/4″, 47 1/4″, 48 3/4″, and 71 1/4″, 72 3/4″.
  12. Nail from the top a 22″ 2×4 truss cut at an 8 degree angle between each of the center marks square and flush with the tops.
  13. Again, nail on the square ends from the outside of the 96″ side square and flush with the tops.
  14. Nail a 48″ x 96″ sheet of 3/8″ plywood to the top of this frame. Flush the bottom corners so the tops meet center over the ridgeline.
  15. Using a straight edge, mark lines above each 22″ truss and across the 96″ rails and nail about every 4″ on these lines as well as along the peak into the ridgeline to fix the sheet in place.
  16. OPTIONAL, attach sheet metal or other roofing.
