First Year Vaccination Schedule

Depending upon each person’s situation or goal with their does and kids, vaccinations will assist in improving and supporting your kids’ immune systems as they grow. Below is a short schedule of vaccinations that we use and recommend in the first year.

Newborn Baby Goat

Initially, baby goats should receive their mother’s milk colostrum or at a minimum, powdered goat colostrum added to their first few bottles. It is important to test your does for CAE, Johne’s, and CL, as her milk has a possibility of infecting the kids. Give a minimum of 20 oz. to the kids for an initial boost to their immune system health.

• Calf Pro, mix in milk when feeding for the prevention of Coccidia (Protozoa that attack the intestinal lining and give them Diarrhea that ALL goats will battle). 1 mg/11 lbs as prevention. We use this option for feeding multiple kids at a time that will be bottle-fed rather than nursed by the does. (This may not be required on your farm based upon the number of kids that are birthed).

Baby Goats 30, 60, and 90 Days Old Vaccination Schedule

• CD&T 30, 60. 90 days & at 1 year of age. 2 mL by Subcutaneous injection. CD&T aids in the prevention of and enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens types B, C, and D. Cl. Perfringens Type B is not a significant problem in the United States. The C.D.& T vaccine for goats provides long-term protection against tetanus and is a USDA-approved tetanus shot for goats. Baby Goats at 1 Year Old 

• CD&T at 1 year of age. 2 mL by Subcutaneous injection. Again, you can purchase at your local feed store. For additional information please check out this article on Giving a CD & T Vaccination.

Fecal Testing at 6 months and at 1 year oldTo keep your herd healthy it is recommended that fecal testing be done at 6 months and at 1 year old. It is crucial to get a fecal test before giving medication. Knowing what to treat is very vital. We recommend MidAmerica AG research. It is a quick print of a small ruminant pdf, collect the fecal samples, write on each baggie, fill out the form, complete the steps suggested. • To treat only if Coccidia is present you can use SMZ’s (Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim tabs) from your veterinarian or other dewormers.
• Albendazole is used to treat Liver Flukes and other worms in feces. Treatment is only for positive fecal test results. Test at 6 months and 1 year of age, then annually thereafter
